Midnight in Valhalla is the second in the series of Kay Francis mysteries set in the 1930s. In this story she’s in Bayreuth, Germany, attending the Wagner opera festival. She becomes involved in a murder case in which she’s the principal suspect and further finds herself enmeshed in the sinister politics swirling around her. She must contend with a skeptical policeman, but she has resources and allies, including fellow author Somerset Maugham and a surprise visitor from Hollywood. But will she solve the murder in time to escape the hangman?

This is my second Kay Francis mystery novel and I am getting addicted to her loveliness and elegance. Based on the actress, Kay Francis (one of the biggest forgotten stars from Hollywood's Golden era) B.C. Stone brings her back to life as a sleuth and provides the reader with the nostalgic memories of the luxury and extravaganza of that period. It is the late 1930's just before WW2 and Kay Francis is attending the Wagner festival in Bayreuth, Germany where she awakens with a dead body in her hotel room and finds herself a suspect in his murder.
The first part of the novel reads more like a literary novel filled with Wagnerian operatic details and the invasion of the Nazis. I am a fervent follower of B.C. Stone's blog because of the way he writes. The novel does not disappoint in its writing style. It is beautifully written and once we get to the mystery part, the suspects are as numerous as in the best of an Agatha Christie mystery. And, of course, the enigmatic Kay Francis, does it again and solves not only one murder but two along with a suicide. I am not giving away the puzzle because it is how she ends up solving it that is the magic of this novel.
A must read not only for mystery buffs but also for lovers of Wagner.

Necessity being the mother of invention, Kay Francis comes into her own as a capable sleuth after being accused of murder. Mr. Stone has woven a thinker's mystery, one that employs politics, opera, art, fashion, and a bygone Hollywood era to paint the full picture. An engrossing read. Bravo!
